I started photographing my family nearly 17 years ago, and eventually turned that passion into a family photography business.
But in the beginning? I remember showing up to sessions, crossing my fingers, and praying that some random patch of grass would somehow transform into magical photos!
Through lots of trial & error (and way too many flustered photo shoots!) plus a growing knowledge of photography in general, I finally created a system for finding and planning locations that offer more interest and variety — and that work beautifully for both personal projects and client sessions.
Now? Scouting locations is one of my favorite parts of the creative process — and yes, I still use this exact system today!

The real life location scouting does take a bit of time, but at the end, you'll have a list of locations you can use and get amazing photos, so it's so worth it!
What if I live in a boring area?
You don't need to live in an area of outstanding natural beauty or in an amazing city - I live in a boring suburban area and find locations nearby all the time (and I always find more!) and I'm sure you will too when you know what to look for!

The process is flexible and works for any kind of session from posed family shots to high school seniors to mini sessions, and in natural locations or urban ones!
